The Shattering - What Happens

The Warcraft Universe is surrounded with so much rich lore, so it really makes sense that they would take that out of the gaming world and into a novel. The success of these novels has been a bit on the hit and miss side depending on who the author is. The Shattering is one of the books that gets a thumbs up. Christie Golden has written other WoW books including Arthas, which was the first New York Times bestseller for Blizzard. Now we have her most recent novel The Shattering, which is the prelude to Cataclysm

The shattering is about politics as well as the personal relationship between the Horde, and the Alliance, and the relationship between Draenor and Azeroth. The Northrend war has taken its toll on the Alliance and the Horde. Both sides have lost thousands upon thousands of citizens and good soldiers in the yearlong battle that has gone on against the Lich King and the Scourge.

Some of the losses hurt worse than others. Anduin Wrynn saw Highlord Bolvar Fordragon lose his life, and he was like a father to Wrynn, and for the Horde the loss of Saurfang the Younger was a real tragedy. He was one of their finest, a hero in the making.

The war has been costly – money, supplies, lives – it has left both Orgrimmar and Stormwind in dire financial trouble. Orgrimmar is also dealing with drought causing the few resources they have to dry up.

Garrosh Hellscream who throughout other novels has been the subject of plenty of vitriol on the part of the Horde players. Well now he gets a fair shake. Finally things are being revealed and rumors are being straightened out. We learn what it is that actually drives Garrosh Hellscream. He is 100% loyal to the Horde. In addition he is an excellent warrior and even though sometimes his decisions are not wise he really does have the Horde’s best interest at heart all the time.

The Alliance is also given a great deal of focus in this storyline. It follows Anduin Wrynn, who is the crown prince of Stormwind. Anduin Wrynn is busy interacting with leaders of the world representing both sides. Varian, his father, suggests he spend time outside of Stormwind Keep.

The interesting part of this book is where it actually focuses. It focuses on the existing lore characters, a nice change from other books like War of the Ancients or Stormrage. The book deals mostly with humans, dwarves, tauren, and orcs, so if you are expecting interaction with other races you could be disappointed. For most, they’ll find this a great read and an excellent precursor to Cataclysm.

Those who are avid players will like the appearance other minor NPCs that they have been introduced to in the game. The magic and the action along with the environment will keep most readers content. The Shattering is one of the best reads to date.

If you are hoping to bridge the gap between The Wrath and The Cataclysm you will want to be sure to read The Shattering. Those still annoyed from Stormage, which was a disappointment for many, will be happy with the heart and soul that this book has to offer.
