This novel covers the events of the Second War. The main characters include Turalyon, Anduin Lothar, Alleria Windrunner, Gul'dan, Khadgar, Zul'jin, King Terenas, Cho'Gall and Orgrim Doomhammer as main characters.

After killing the corrupt Warchief Blackhand, Orgrim Doomhammer quickly seized control over the Orcish Horde. Now Orgrim Doomhammer is resolute in conquering the rest of Azeroth so that his people will again have a home of their own in the World of Warcraft.

Anduin Lothar, the former Champion of Stormwind, has abandoned his shattered homeland leading his people across the Great Sea to the shores of Lordaeron. Once there, with the help of King Terenas, he forges a powerful alliance with other human nations. However, that may not be adequate to stop the Horde's cruel attack.

There are internal conflicts in the Alliance, and Greymane isn’t willing to lend any more than token support and even Alterac is hesitant to join the Alliance. They do gain minor support from the high elves. However there are internal conflicts present in the Horde. Orgrim Doomhammer keeps Gul’dan on a short leash and the Blackhand sons are now totally against his rule.

Gul’dan plans to claim God like powers and desert the Horde. He makes all kinds of false submissions to Doomhammer. The Horde is able to make allies, as Doomhammer finds the forest trolls, and convinces their leader, Zul'jin, to join them after he is rescued from the humans.

The first battle starts near Southshore. The Alliance is prepared for the Horde, but the Paladins are strong and the battle is long and violent, with both sides struggling for control. Meanwhile In the Hinterlands Kurdran Wildhammer is introduced. He discovers the orcs are allied with the trolls and that they could strike at any time. However the Wildhammers are powerful warriors with fearsome flying skills.

Somewhere around this time, Zuluhed learns what the Demon Soul he saw in his vision, is capable of, and he realizes he is unable to control that magic. He summons Nekros Skullcrusher, his most trusted clan member, and asks him to learn how to use the disk. He then goes on to enslave Queen Alexstrasza so she can bare his children as their secret weapon.

As the Horde marches through the mountain pass to reach Quel'Thalas, Turalyon and the others are on their way. Zul'jin and his brethren are in the forests, preparing for the Horde by slaughtering mass numbers of elves. Kurdran Wildhammer and his fellow Wildhammers arrive, and use their storm hammers to kills several ogres. Sadly, in the end they are forced to retreat.

Meanwhile, the King of Alterac, Aiden Perenolde, summons Doomhammer to cut a deal that would leave Alterac unharmed, in exchange for a map, which showed a short cut to the Capital City. Doomhammer accepts, and then rallies his troops for a surprise attack.

Back in Lordaeron, the Alliance is ready to attack and to finish off the Horde. It’s a long battle that rages on. Orgrim Doomhammer and Anduin Lothar clash. Eventually, Doomhammer is able to kill Lothar and shatter his sword. Turalyon, is furious, turning on Doomhammer, ordering the Horde arrested after they are defeated. In the end, the Alliance is victorious.
